The Self-Cleaning Properties of Stainless Steel

Stainless Steels are available in more than 100 different qualities, meeting the requirements of the most different corrosive conditions by offering an exceptional quality: they are provided with a self-healing surface.

A so-called passive layer will form on their surface, due to the contents of alloy used. Even in case of damages to the stainless steel surface, such a transparent layer of a thickness of only a few atomic layers will form again independently, due to the influence of oxygen from the air or the water.

The formation of the passive layer is the reason why Stainless Steels do not need any further corrosion treatment and appear to be as good as new, even after so many decades.
